Australorp is an Australian breed of the black Orpington chicken.
The rooster kindly "posed" for me by a vintage egg basket and rustic chicken feeder.

Black & white photo taken and handpainted by the artist, hand-colored with alkyd-oil glazes

8 x 10 inches

The website www.mypetchicken.com describes this chicken as: They are calm and friendly, and excellent layers of light brown eggs. The Australorp's exceptionally soft, shiny black plumage has hints of green and purple in the sunlight. Peaceful and dignified, Australorps are an absolutely delightful bird which we highly recommend to anyone who wants a pet chicken that lays dependably.

Some people have asked me to create small original works that would be more affordable than oil paintings.  In 2004, therefore, I began to use oil glazes on black and white photographs, a process that takes less time than a full painting.  I select a photo that I have taken.  First I seal it, to protect it from the oil glazes.  I then apply from four to twelve glazes of color and add texture by hand.  For your information in regard to the uniqueness of these images, since 2004 until now I have painted on thirty-four photographs.  Unique art to bring warmth and beauty to your home, one of a kind.  Even if I hand-color another rooster, it will differ from this one since each color will be mixed and applied by hand.

I like chickens, which bring back memories of my grandmother Gertrude's Iowa farm, where I had the blessing of spending some childhood summers.  Grandma's kindly face and the bustle of farm animals greeted me each morning.  For the kittens, I poured milk into dishes under the lilac bushes.  Then I brushed my pony's coat.  How I treasure those memories!

Color: Some computer screens may modify the color of the art.  Some may make the image lighter or darker than it is. It has violet-black on the rooster and ecru-beige on the eggs.

FRAMING: Matting and framing is on your own.  In the photos are two samples of framing that have been used.
